Hello there and welcome to the March Release Notes! With the defeat of Aerbax, there is a feeling of hope in the air. Could it be a coincidence that spring has arrived early?

Let’s see what else is going on in Asheron’s Call for the month of March.

Aerbax Fight Changes

  • The Emissary of Asheron is now friendlier to players who have defeated Aerbax.
  • Some new items have been added to the rewards for defeating Aerbax. Players may want to run this quest again, and see what they might get.
  • A typo in Aerbax’s intro dialog has been fixed. He now knows how to spell his own name.
  • Players should not be able to stay on Aerbax’s platform after defeating him.
  • Aerbax should no longer be having the issue which caused him to pop back to full health.
  • Due to the change that was needed to make sure Aerbax did not pop back to full health, we have raised his overall health level to ensure the fight remains challenging to players.
  • The Emissary of Asheron should now give time estimates to players waiting for another group to finish the Aerbax quest.
  • There is now a shortcut to the portal device for players, so there is no longer a need to make the long run after each death during the Aerbax fight.

Miscellaneous Changes

  • The Spear of Purity has had its attack modifier raised to 15% and its defense modifier raised to 10%.
  • The Chorizite pea now splits into Chorizite powder instead of oil.
  • Asheron’s Servant now accepts the Charged Shards.
  • The Gladiator's Defense Armor Augments description has been changed to, raises bludgeon resistance by .2 (since that's what it does). Its cost has been lowered to 15 coins.
  • The Chorizite pea from Trial of the Heart now states it can't be split (it never could be and confused some people).
  • The Gem of Spectral Force's description now states melee weapons only.
  • Scepter of Might now has a 18% attack mod and a 7% defense mod.
  • The Spectral Crystal of the Life Giver now has a life magic icon instead of war.
  • Winter is over in Dereth and spring is upon us. The snow has melted away and once again the baby creatures of Dereth roam the landscape.
  • There have been reports that some kind of strange statue has appeared near the Mage Academy.
  • As we approach the beginning of April, make sure you are on the lookout for some “foolish” activities.
  • The Magic Defense Weapon Augmentation gem now works on wands.
  • The Sword of Soroku has had its multi strike removed, and should now have a wield requirement.
  • The Spellbook interface has been reorganized in preparation for level 8 spells.

Quest Experience Updates
We have changed or raised the experience that player can receive on some of our older quests this month. Many of our older quests gave a flat rate or no xp at all for completion. We have begun the process of adjusting some of these quests to be more in line with the rewards we are now giving out for quest completion. Below is a list of the quests that have been adjusted for the month of March. If the xp mechanics have changed in any way, it will be detailed below. Please note that at no point should the rewards player get be lessened by these changes.

  • Aerlinthe: No change to mechanics, players will now receive a percentage based reward for completion.
  • Gaerlan: Players will now receive a percentage based xp reward for completing the quest, as well as the xp for turning in the sword.
  • Impious Staff: Players will now receive a percentage based xp reward along with the staff upon completion of the quest.
  • Crystal Array Core: Players will now receive a percentage based xp reward for turning in Soul Gems to the same NPC’s who hand out the weapons upon completion of the quests.

So there are just some of the things we have in store for Asheron's Call in March. Please remember that along with everything listed here, there are several new quests and exciting things going into the game for the March event.

The lonely lord sat in his private sanctum, staring blankly into the runes he had just inscribed into his heavy, leatherbound journal.  He idly tapped his fingers on the top of his desk, and the only sound audible over the click of bone against chalcedony was the soft, keening whine, the sound of a soul in torment, from the altar behind him.

From the back of the study, interrupting the lord’s solitude, came the sound of bootsteps in the empty corridor.  He did not have to look to know that one of the household servants in charge of maintaining this library complex had come to his study.

“Speak, majordomo,” he said, not bothering to turn around.  “What is it you would have of me?”

“My lord,” the servant rasped through a ruined throat, “the archivists are almost done with packing the most precious texts.  The guards grow nervous as these… disturbances continue.  It is almost time to leave, my lord.  All that remains is… your part.”

The clicking of fingers on writing surface stopped as the lord closed the book in front of him.  The majordomo stepped closer, making sure to keep a safe distance from the garishly lit altar between him and his master.

“Shall I take that journal for you, my lord?  There is room yet, not all of the boxes have been sealed for transport back to His Majesty’s court.  There is still time…”

The lord laughed, grim and bitter.  “Time is one thing we do not lack, majordomo.  It will be thousands of years before these halls are disturbed again, if my dreams are true.”

“As you say, my lord.”

The lord stood, pushing his chair out, and he looked down upon the sealed journal.  For a long moment, he remained still.  The majordomo took one nervous step closer.  “My lord?  Your journal?  And the… other book?”  As if to underscore his urgency, a dull, rumbling boom rolled through the chamber again.  Dust sifted from the stonework above and trickled onto the desk and the floor nearby.

The lord hissed and swept the book off the desk with one angry motion.  The book fell to the ground with a loud thump, and reflexively, the servant rushed to pick it up.

“No.”  The lord’s voice echoed, even louder than the sounds of crumbling stone that surrounded them.  “Leave it be.  I am done with it.  Tell the archivists to be on their way.  I shall follow in a few moments.  With the other book.”

The servant retreated, scuttling backwards out of the room, bowing abjectly every few steps.  The lord suddenly spun to look at him and called out.

“Wait.  Where is my seal?”

The servant bowed again, afraid to meet his master’s eyes.  “My lord, I do not know.  I thought you had it.  I do not come in here myself, as you know, except in this case, when I had to tell my lord—“

“I know why you came here, majordomo.  Very well.  That will be all.  Go, tell the archivists.”

“As you say, my lord.”  The majordomo fairly flew out of the room in his eagerness to escape his master’s strange temper and the pulsing book on the altar at the center of the room.

The lord looked around the study once more.  He looked at the half-emptied bookshelves, ransacked for all irreplaceable items.  He looked at the fallen journal on the floor at his feet.  He looked at the altar at the center of the room, the vessel of his greatest triumph and deepest despair.  “Would that you had been here, my lady, perhaps I would have thought better of it,” he muttered, to no one in particular.

He shook his head and then straightened up, with an audible creak of dusty bones.  He walked toward the altar in the middle of the room and the book that sat upon it, which bathed everything nearby in a ghastly red glow.

He stopped in front of the altar and reached out slowly, almost hesitantly, to touch the book.  This book was larger and heavier than the journal he’d been keeping, and the binding sickened even one as inured to horror as he was.  As he drew close, he could hear sibilant whispering in his mind.  Down the corridor there were the sounds of running feet and shouted commands as his minions finished their preparations to abandon his library.  Another rumbling roar echoed through the halls.  It sounded like the very masonry was coming apart.

The lord addressed the book itself as he took hold of it with both hands.  “If it were my decision, I would leave you here and hope these halls remain sealed forever.  But I know that will not be true, that this library and that accursed graveyard will come forth again some day.  And perhaps the only chance to reverse the damage done is somewhere else within your thrice-damned pages.  Very well.  Come on, you vile thing.  My master awaits.”

The whispers built to a crescendo in his head as he tried to lift the book from the altar.  There was a moment of resistance, as if he had been encased in unyielding stone, before the book came free from the altar.  The lord shook his head and snarled as he tucked the book unceremoniously under one arm like a novice in his own academy.  “Never should I have agreed to use you.  The Mhoires were not worth this.  I have made too many bad bargains.”

The book shivered briefly with malevolent humor.  Ignoring it, the lord held his hand over the altar and spoke a few words in another language, a language even more ancient than his own.  The altar shimmered as his warding spell settled over it.  He stood there for a few moments more, probing at the ward with his own keenly attuned magical senses.  The ward was incomplete.  Flawed.  It seemed that the consequences of his meddling had affected even his own casting abilities in this place.

Shaking his head, Lord Rytheran strode out of his study and ritual chamber for the last time, accompanied by the ominous rumble of shifting rock and barely audible laughter.

On a windy northern beach, amidst a riotously colored assortment of coral outcroppings and relics from the bottom of the sea, a pair of Merwart brothers sat on white sand and scanned the horizon.

One brother, Urglurg, older and more than a little smarter, cocked his great, melon-sized blue head and turned to address his brother, who was currently picking at a knobbly protrusion on his forehead, instead of watching the sea for the boxes that their patron arranged to have wash on shore regularly.

“Angry Grandfather says we must watch the tides for more man bodies now, too.”

His brother Gurglurg blinked wide yellow eyes, carefully considering this news.  Higher thought and cause-and-effect was still a little new to these Merwarts, raised from the savagery of their Mosswart cousins by the intervention of one scholar with a potent, mind-expanding elixir…

Finally, after some visible effort, Gurglurg spoke.  “Does this mean more mans want to speak with the Voice of the Deep Waters?”  The Merwart community was used to seeing mutilated human corpses wash up on their beach, adventurers who had attempted to penetrate the mysteries of the island’s depths, or of the Dark Isle nearby… Sometimes the humans re-appeared near the Merwart settlement’s floating blue stone and went to recover metal and shiny objects from their own corpses.  Sometimes these appearances inspired a moment of religious terror among the Merwarts until somebody, usually Urglurg, reminded them that this was the magic of the blue stone, and that Angry Grandfather had shown them the way of this, as well.

Urglurg nodded condescendingly, proud of his position as the oldest and wisest of Angry Grandfather’s brood, and the sole representative of their small colony that actually received messages from their patron and deity.  “Angry Grandfather says that they are coming to the Voice of the Deep Waters to cleanse themselves.  Or maybe they come to clean something that they carry.  He says that it all has something to do with the tentacle demon of the mainland and the sky-islands he made to make war on the humans.”

Gurglurg sucked in his breath.  “Sky-islands?  Who puts islands in the sky?  How are they held up?”  For demonstration, he grabbed a handful of sand and let it trickle through his fingers.  “I am not the smartest of us, not so smart as you, but I know that ground is down and sky is up.”

Urglurg waved his fingers dramatically, mimicking the gestures he saw when their patron used his own magical powers.  “Magic.  Some humans can do those things, and the tentacle demon can too.  In fact, Angry Grandfather says the tentacle demon made these sky-islands above the black, broken lands not that far from Angry Grandfather’s home.  He says that more people can do more terrible things like this because…”  He searched his memory for the right word.  “Because of… ley lines.  Where the magic of the world flows, like beer from a tap, as he said.  You know, like that place in the jungle that gives you a headache when you go near.”

Gurglurg shivered.  “The tentacle demon is scary.  I hope he never comes to our island.  This place is bad enough with the flying jaws and the landsharks and the dead mans.  Angry Grandfather told me once that the tentacle demon even raised up one of our Mosswart cousins, on some stinky hot island far south of us.  He made the Mosswart crazy and it tried to become king of all Mosswarts.”  He paused.  “He said that the tentacle demon put his eyes and voice inside the poor Mosswart, so he can always see what the Mosswart sees and talk inside the Mosswart’s head.  Can you imagine if Angry Grandfather had been so cruel?  I think we are lucky that Angry Grandfather found us, instead of the tentacle demon.”

“Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad, if the tentacle demon didn’t yell all the time like Angry Grandfather does.  Sometimes Angry Grandfather seems like not a god to me,” Urglurg confessed.  “Sometimes when he forgets things and we remind him, I think it is because he really forgot them, and not because he is testing our… limited mental faculties and recall,” he said, reciting the last words as he’d heard them.

Gurglurg looked a little scared by his older brother’s doubting words.  His first impulse was to react in shock to Urglurg’s doubts.  Then he realized he might agree with Urglurg, especially on the days when Angry Grandfather was particularly angry.  He didn’t want to voice these doubts, though.  And then thankfully, he was distracted by motion on the horizon.  He peered out to sea and narrowed his eyes, and he saw a great brown crate bobbing on the waves, like Angry Grandfather had promised.  “I see the box,” he told his brother, and they both stood up to stride into the surf and bring it in from the water.

Angry Grandfather told them that these deliveries of metal weapons and other objects sought by humans were because of his benevolence toward the Merwarts he’d raised up from their primitive existences.  There was no reason to doubt Angry Grandfather – not with the deliveries coming regularly, as he promised…

As they came down the shore and got a better look at the box, they could see a dark shape clinging to it like a big tangled mass of seaweed.  They could eventually tell that it was a human body, slumped over the box, floating towards them.  The brothers clucked regretfully as they brought the box ashore with its additional cargo.

Setting the box aside for a moment, whose contents had long ceased to inspire wonder or surprise, they investigated the corpse.  It was a human male in dark leather armor, with much darker hair and less wrinkly skin than their Angry Grandfather – though the salt water hadn’t done much for his face.  His hand was gripped tightly around something – some kind of bar of mottled purplish metal, which tingled with power and gave out a faint red light, even visible under the noontime sun.  Gurglurg sniffed it and recoiled.  “Yech!  It smells like the place in the jungle that gives me headaches!”

Urglurg sniffed it as well, and wrinkled his nose.  He then tried to pry it out of the human’s cold, clenched hand.  “Very heavy,” he muttered.  The human’s grip, even in recent death, was unbreakable.  “I wonder what this has to do with the tentacle demon.”

A voice came from behind them.  “That’s corruption you smell, little fella.  The ingot is tainted with the Living Darkness.”  A shadow fell over the two brothers as they fussed with the corpse.  It was the dead man, back to reclaim his corpse.  His back was to the sun so they couldn’t see his face clearly, but they could tell it was him.  They heard, but did not see, a blade being unsheathed.  “Step away, friends.  That ingot’s very important – to me, to my employers, to everyone on Dereth, and even your weird little colony.  Young Kei told me what I had to do with it, and I’d hate to have to kill you two to get it to where it’s supposed to be purified.  I’m sure your blood is not the blood I’m looking for.”

February Release Notes PDF Print E-mail

Hello there and welcome to the February Release Notes. This month we see what could be the culmination of what Aerbax has been working towards. Will the People of Dereth be able to stop Aerbax from completing his master plan? We are also going to take a special look at what goes into making a new Loot Tier for Asheron’s Call as written by our very own Lupus Argenteus.

Let’s see what else is new and exciting this month!

Due to a bug, the XP players have been getting in this particular section of the Claude’s Mind/Vision Quest is much higher than we wanted it to be. In the February event, high level players choosing to hunt in this section will now get approximately 250 million XP per hour, which is much more in line with what we originally intended it to be.

The portal in The Black Death Catacombs which led to the Deeper Catacombs was accidentally reverted to the original unusable version from a previous month. This has now been fixed and players will once again be able to use the portal.

In January, once a player had finished the Shadow of Bael'Zharon quest, they could not gain entry again in order to help other players complete the quest. In the February event players who have already completed the quest will now be able to gain entry to the dungeon in order to help others complete it.

Hoshino Kei has moved into Asheron’s Tower. Players may want to go speak with her to see why she has decided to change locations.

Once again it seems the Tanada are up to something. It appears that they may have issued a challenge to other great warriors.

Travelers have reported seeing new floating structures over the Obsidian Plains recently. Perhaps these structures have something to do with Aerbax.

There seems to be some shady characters around some of the Ley Lines. Any players willing to investigate these reports shall be rewarded.

The Drudge’s that are a part of the Direland Champions hunting should no long one shot players. The spell that was the cause of this has been removed from their profile.

In-Development

Life, Love and the New Loot Tier

One of the most fun things in Asheron’s Call is the loot system.  Randomly generated treasure has always been one of the cornerstones of our game, with the sheer variety of colors, statistics, and endowments which items may have leading to a sense of anticipation anytime a player is actively involved in seeking treasure.  Many of us can recall the time we got that Celdon breastplate with just the right color veins, or that Major Bloodthirst max damage fire sword, or perhaps your favorite triple major crown.  Treasure is, quite simply, rewarding (pardon the pun).

However, the current loot options have been available since 2004 – 4 years without a major update.  There have been many forum posts lamenting the quality of loot distribution in an area where the best loot profile in the game is already available.  Unfortunately, many players have mined the current treasure options to exhaustion, and are looking for better loot than what currently exists.  It’s time for us to introduce new loot options that will hopefully rejuvenate high level players’ interest in loot.

Distribution

The first question to answer would be, “How is new loot going to be available?”  Currently, we have treasure profiles globally on most monsters and on most treasure chests.  We’re going to make a slight change to that.

We want to reward players who complete quests first and foremost.  Therefore, the reward for completing a given difficult quest might be a key to a treasure chest using the new loot tier, as an example.  We hope that this will improve the quality of the rewards from quests, while simultaneously maintaining our “loot items should be better than quest items” design belief.

We’re probably not going to make the new loot tier available on monsters you can grind.  We don’t want to encourage more grind.  Instead, achievement should be based on accomplishing great deeds.  That’s not to say that we won’t ever have, say, a kill task where the reward is a key to a chest which uses the new loot tier – just that we don’t want every single monster corpse dropping the new loot tier in addition to the kill task reward.

Reward

We’re escalating the nature of rewards, but not necessarily in the same ways that you have become used to.  For example, one radical choice we have made is not to increment armor levels that are available in loot, instead electing to increase other attributes instead.

Here’s a small selection of things we are improving in the new loot tier:

  • Melee, Missile, and Magic damage – We’ll be introducing souped-up weapons and elevating damage potential for all three playstyles.  Weapons (and casters) are designed to hurt people, and so we’ll try to help them perform that role more effectively.

  • Staff-variant Elemental Casters – As requested, we’re going to see about adding an elemental version of these, to complement the current scepter option.

  • Epic Cantrips – Players have been able to access Epic cantrips on items for a little over a year now.  The next step is to get them into the loot system.  All your old Major favorites will be available in Epic form.

  • Armor Sets and Set Spells – In addition to Epic Cantrips, though, players will now have access to pieces of armor which grant additional bonuses (above normal spells and cantrips) if the proper set is worn.  These will range in power and effect as the player wears more of a given set.

  • New Armor Types – We have plans to introduce four different new types of armor into loot.  I won’t say what they are yet, but I’ll give one hint – two are based off of pieces that you’ve previously seen static, non-dyeable versions of before, and two are all-new types.

  • Base Armor Level Rebalance – Currently, the lower-quality material armors aren’t just lower-quality – they’re unusably low.  We’re going to set the AL spread to be much narrower than it is currently.

  • Components for Level 8 spells – Sometimes we on the dev team wonder if you guys have spy cameras in the building at Turbine.  We’ve been seriously bouncing around ideas for the level 8 spells for months, but someone made a thread about them just last week.  We’re not going to be introducing an entire array of level 8 spells, but we will be introducing a significant number.  We’ll definitely be introducing level 8 war spells to keep mage damage on par with the other archetypes, for example.  When I say components…well, I’ll save that for the next section.

Economy

We’d like to see the economy of the game spike in popularity.  We believe that several of the changes we’re putting in will stimulate growth in the adventuring sector…alright, I’m not Bernanke and you guys don’t want to hear economic theory.  We think a lot of the changes to the loot system will stimulate trading in a few ways.

For one, completing your armor set is going to be difficult.  Previously, you were looking for the right color on the right type of armor with the right dual major (well, OK – I’ve seen some of your armor sets when I’ve run live ops and some of you definitely don’t care so much for the right color).  Now you’ll have cantrips, set bonus, AL, type, and appearance all to factor in.  You can get functional quickly, but to be perfectly where you want to be is probably going to take a lot of luck or a lot of horse trading (obligatory disclaimer – no, we’re not adding horses).  But it can be done, and we think the process of doing this will increase player interaction.

Assembling your magic spells will also take some economy management.  Spell scrolls will no longer be found in chests.  Instead, you’ll get to craft them yourselves, using four different types of components.  Some will be found in loot, some…well, you’ll find out where those will be found soon enough.  It’s important to note that these tradeable components will be multi-use – you might use a Glyph of Corrosion to create an Incantation of Acid Blast or an Incantation of Acid Lure. Either way, you’ll have two options on how to get these spells – looting the components yourself or trading for the components or scrolls you want.  It’s a way of introducing a smaller version of spell research while still making it accessible for those who don’t want to bother.

Conclusion

We’re pretty excited about the new loot system.  It’s a new incentive for the upper tier players to keep playing, to find that one perfect item, while still having a shot at useful items in the meantime.  In fully discussing the new loot system with past and present devs, there’s been an excited buzz – we think the new system catches a bit of the old spirit of the game, while still being accessible to newer players as well.  We look forward to when we can unveil it to you!

Hello and welcome to the Release Notes for the January 2008 update of Asheron’s Call! This month we find that the seasons have once again changed, and a chill is in the air. With this change of seasons, we see the arrival of snow once again across the landscape. This of course means that players may run into a snowman or two in their adventures. Be careful though, as not all snowmen are friendly.

Some adventurers have been reporting that they have been having some problems recalling exactly what happened during some of Dereth’s major events. Some feel that Aerbax is involved in this somehow. Perhaps speaking with Asheron could clear things up?

Lets see what else is happening in Dereth this month!

We have raised the damage of Streak spells across the board. Players using these spells should notice an increased amount of damage when using these spells in combat. Below is a listing of the damage before and after the changes we have made.

Streak Damage Before January Update  Streak Damage after January Update

 Level 1: 15-30
 Level 2: 16-32
 Level 3: 18-36
 Level 4: 20-40
 Level 5: 22-44
 Level 6: 26-52
 Level 7: 30-60

 Level 1: 15-30
 Level 2: 17-34
 Level 3: 20-40
 Level 4: 24-48
 Level 5: 28-56
 Level 6: 34-68
 Level 7: 40-80

Alchemy peas have been added to the game. This will help those who use grenades create their wares in batches now. We suggest all those interested, speak with Janier al-Evv in Xarabydun.

With the turning of the seasons, the landscape has once again begun to take on a more winter feel.

The events that were started in October, will be turned off this month. This includes the Al-Jalima invasion, the Harvest Reaper spawns, and the the Majestic Pumpkin.

Frosthaven has once again become an active area. Make sure to check the area out and help the snowmen.

Rumors of a Snowman who is need of assistance have been floating around recently. They say he has been seen most frequently in the mountains to the northeast.

Since it is the winter season, the presents have returned to Dereth. Have you been good?

Some new named creatures have been seen in the Direlands. It is reported that these creatures are not only a bit tougher, but they also drop a unique item upon death, which can be turned in for a reward.

Aerbax is up to something strange. Many of Dereth’s citizens have been reporting having some strange visions of events past.

A new face has appeared in Fort Tethana. Make sure you investigate why he is here.

Players will soon have the ability to purchase a rename for their characters. There are some rules and restrictions to this new feature. Please keep watching the forums for the official announcement.

So there are just some of the things we have in store for Asheron's Call in January. Please remember that along with everything listed here, there are several new quests and exciting things going into the game for the January event.

The bugs just wouldn’t stop coming.  There shouldn’t even have been that many in this chamber.  Something was wrong.

Adso spun away from one Olthoi’s stabbing, spearlike claw and ducked under a stream of sizzling acid from another.  Patches of burned and slashed leather dotted his entire body, marking near-misses and narrow hits.  Ignoring the acid that splashed onto his already wounded shoulder, he brought the full strength of his body to bear as he stepped into a lunging attack against the nearest Olthoi, the one that had just spit acid at him.  He found the weak point where two plates of chitinous armor met just under the creature’s head.  He drove the point of his dirk into the gap and punched the thick blade in all the way to the hilt, then twisted his wrist and slammed his free hand against the pommel of his dirk like a hammer hitting a chisel.

With a shriek and a reverberating crack, the Olthoi’s head split open from the bottom.  Viscera and gore spilled onto Adso’s outstretched forearm, and he pulled himself back into a defensive pose as the Olthoi fell heavily to the stone floor.  He narrowly escaped another stabbing attack from the other Olthoi as he rolled back.  He drew a throwing knife with his left hand while he brandished the gore-encrusted dirk with his right.  Breathing hard and beginning to tire, Adso watched the Olthoi’s attack patterns as he came into melee range with the beast.  He hunched down in a defensive squat and parried the Olthoi’s attacks low and away, forcing the creature to stoop over him, waiting for the telltale mandible movements that would alert him to an impending acid attack.

When the moment came, he reacted instantly and decisively.  As the Olthoi drew its head back to spew acid at him, Adso’s left hand shot out and jabbed the throwing knife right into the spot between the Olthoi’s mandibles.  The Olthoi reared up in agony, giving Adso just enough time and space to roll mostly out of the way before acid started pouring messily from the ruin of the Olthoi’s maw.  Adso stood back, watching in disgusted fascination as the Olthoi staggered back and forth, literally choking to death on its own acid.  A few splashes had gotten onto his armor, again, as acid sprayed uncontrollably from the creature’s suddenly ruptured mandibles.

So intent was Adso on the spectacle that he was almost surprised by the next wave of Olthoi charging up the tunnel.  They came surging towards him out of the darkness, but stopped short of coming into melee range with him.  He could see others fanning out into the corridors beyond, probably to surround him in the tunnels and cut off any chance of escape.  He could feel the ground shaking, felt dust and rock shaking loose from the tunnel’s ceiling and walls as something truly huge emerged from the shadowed chamber at the far end of this tunnel.

“This can’t be right,” Adso thought as the Olthoi Queen shuffled forward with all her soldier-children gathered around her.  “There hasn’t been a Queen in these tunnels since…”  His thought went unfinished as he caught a glimpse of a grisly trophy impaled on one of the Queen’s claws: a human head, with long blonde hair hanging from it, now caked with blood and dirt.

“It’s not possible,” Adso muttered to the Olthoi Queen and her assembled host.  “You died years ago, before I even came here…”  The Queen hissed, as if in response, and Adso began to back up the tunnel, retracing his steps to the surface.  The Olthoi horde followed him, step for step, accompanied by triumphant-sounding hisses and screeches from their Queen.  Finally, Adso turned and ran as fast as he could, and the horde took off after him in shrieking, chittering pursuit.

Adso found his exit tunnel blocked by rapidly advancing bugs, too many to avoid or quickly kill.  He fled down another tunnel, in search of an alternate route, only to find it similarly blocked with a mass of charging insects, and so he ran again.  At some point he gave up on trying to keep a sense of direction in the maze-like warren of tunnels and ran down whichever path seemed least dangerous or most likely to lead upward, towards fresh air and freedom.  He was caught several times by Olthoi ambushes.  Though he managed to narrowly escape a fatal strike each time and killed several more Olthoi, he was stabbed and burned repeatedly, and the ordeal was taking its toll on his health and his equipment.  He gulped potions when he could and just tried to keep one step ahead of the ravening bugs.

Finally, after an eternity of running and fighting, with the breath wheezing out of him, his muscles burning with fatigue and his potions all gone, he saw a patch of light at the end of a long, upward-leading tunnel.  Ignoring the pain that wracked his body, Adso ran.  He was almost to the edge of the tunnel when a black spike lanced out of the darkness and impaled his calf.  He stumbled and rolled to the ground, muscles torn.  Behind him he could see three Olthoi and the darkened side in which they’d been hiding.  He’d failed to notice that deeper patch of blackness on his way to the exit, blinded by fatigue and desperate hope of an escape.  He’d fallen right into their trap.

“How’d you outsmart me anyway?” he asked softly, as the Olthoi crept slowly up on him.  As if in answer to his question, there was a glow of purple light from behind.  Adso turned his head to look, and he saw that a Virindi had appeared in the tunnel up ahead, in the exit to the surface world that had attracted his attention.  He tried to crawl that way with just his arms and one good leg, determined at least to die in the fresh air, and not in these dank tunnels.

It wasn’t just any Virindi, though… As Adso crawled closer, he could make out its masked face.  Not the kind of mask that he was used to seeing on Virindi, and something in its posture indicated curiosity or interest, more than was usual from these aloof beings.  The Virindi floated closer, and he could hear a voice, impatient and eager, echoing in his mind.  “Tell me, human… How true does this realm feel to you?  Did we correctly map the details?  Master will be displeased if our work is imperfect…”

Before Adso could shake off his confusion and try to respond, there was an explosion of pain from his midsection.  He looked behind him and saw that he’d been impaled to the ground by an Olthoi claw through his abdomen.  He could feel the blood pooling hot beneath him, felt the agony from his stomach…  Above him loomed an Olthoi, its other claw already slick with blood from Adso’s leg.  The bloody claw reared up in the air, ready to end his life… then lanced downward, right at his head…

* * * * * * * *

Adso woke up with a shout.  It took him a moment to realize that he was lying in a bedroll by a campfire, not on a blood-slicked patch of tunnel with Olthoi and a strangely curious Virindi around him.  He looked around, scared and confused, and saw Master and Sabithra also sitting up in their bedrolls, both of them wide-eyed and disoriented.

“I dreamed that the Olthoi Queen was not dead,” Adso gasped.

“I dreamed that the Hopeslayer ruled Dereth!  The seas and rivers were red with blood…” Sabithra whispered.

The two of them looked at each other, then looked at their Master, who was still silent, staring into the distance.

“Master?” Adso whispered.  “Master, did you dream of something?”

“I dreamed I was still on Ispar,” their Master muttered, his voice hollow with terror.

In another thread from earlier today the question came up about what we have planned for the future, more specifically this year. So after meeting with the team, they are forcing me to give you all a little sneak peek at what the team is busy working on.

There is a very special milestone upcoming for Asheron's Call and Turbine upcoming this year, as some of you may know. This is something that has not been accomplished by any other game or game company as far as we know. During this year, Asheron's Call will have its 100th content update! This is something we want to celebrate with our players. This is something truly special that need to be marked by a truly special event.

What we have planned for everyone is still in early development, and as time goes on we will begin discussing this special occasion in much more detail, but for now I will leave you all with something to think about and discuss.

With the 100th update, one of our goals is to implement a new faction system into Asheron's Call. Now before you ask, we are not at the point yet to share more details, but when that time does come, we will let everyone know. This is just a little teaser to let everyone know we do have goals and we do have plans going forward.

Due to operational constraints and stability issues with the December Patch, Turbine has made the decision that delaying the December update until January is in everyone’s best interest.  We know this will be disappointing for those players who enjoy our monthly content, but after weighing all of our options we feel that this is the right decision given the circumstances.

In the meantime, our live events staff will be providing more events over the remainder of December and into January.  Our goal with these in-game events is not only to have fun with current players, but also let those players who may return to us over the Holidays see what our live events team has been up to!

November 2007: Release Notes PDF Print E-mail
Monthly Patch Page

Hello and welcome to the November Release Notes.  This month brings many changes to an already turbulent world.  Humans and Lugians alike have seen strange happenings to members of their kind, and even the Carenzi on Marae Lassel have been reported to have some kind of strange illness.  Lets see what other changes will hit Dereth this month.

Miscellaneous Changes and Improvements

We will be running a series of scheduled and unscheduled Live Ops this month.  Once we have the completed schedule, we will post it on the launcher and on the official forums.

On the weekend of December 15-16th we will be increasing the drop rate of all Rares in the game.  During this time all player who are fighting Rare eligible creatures will have an increased chance of getting a Rare drop.

Orisis had more health then was intended.  This has been fixed and his health is now more in line with what was expected.

As a result of the extra downtime we have had this month, most of the timed content that was in for October, will remain in the game for the November event as well.

A problem was found with the behavior of the Olthoi Flyers in the infested area of Olthoi North. These Olthoi have been removed from the area until the issue can be properly resolved.

The text seen by players, who have been banned from the game, now has the new link to our ban appeals team.

A few more masks or headgear as it were, have been added in this month.  It seems some things just needed some last minute fixes by the mask makers.

Some additional items have been added to the various special vendors throughout Dereth.  These vendors are located at the Colosseum, Infested Olthoi area, and the Graveyard, respectively. Make sure you check them out to see what new items they have in stock.

There appears to be some sort of plague affecting the Carenzi of Marae Lassel.

The Prodigal Shadow Dungeon is now a landblock that does not unload.  This means that all corpse decay timers will be exact for that dungeon.  This also means that players will no longer have to “hold the landblock” to prevent it from resetting.

So there are just some of the things we have in store for Asheron's Call in November.  Please remember that along with everything listed here, there are several new quests and exciting things going into the game for the November event.
